What is RMS in Indian Postal Department

RMS was introduced in India in 1879-1880.

It is the second part of the India Post Office Department.

RMS means Railway Mail Service

The full form of RMS is Railway Mail Service.

The Postal Department is divided into two parts.

The first part is post offices and the second part is RMS offices.

RMS is different from post offices because post offices book mail and the RMS office sorts and transmits mail to other locations.

Hence, we can say RMS is the second part of the India Postal Department.

RMS Office Work

The main work of RMS is sorting and transmitting mail bags through sections, RTN, Flight, etc.

All bags containing speed post articles, registered articles, and parcels received from other RMS offices and post offices are opened and closed at the RMS office. 

The sorting work is done by a Sorting Assistant in RMS offices.

He is equal to a Postal assistant and appointed by the SSC CGL examination.

The Head Sorting Assistant (HSA) is in charge of the Mail Office.

Mail Office handles bags and the content of bags. It receives, closes, and dispatches all kinds of bags.

The Record Office is a stationary office of the RMS where the work papers of the section and mail office are maintained and stored.

The Head Record Office (HRO) is situated at the headquarters of RMS Division. It is a stationary office.

HRO prepares salary and contingent bills for the entire division.
